The American Nurses Association (ANA) first recognized National Nurses Day on May 6, 1982. In 1990, the Board of Directors for ANA extended National Nurses Day to a week-long celebration. National Nurses Week is now celebrated from May 6-12 each year. This year is different, however! Since the World Health Organization (WHO) named 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, ANA has decided to extended National Nurses Week into a month-long celebration.
