Primary sources are documents that were created by people who lived through an event. Primary sources may be letters, diaries, photographs, records, government documents such as treaties, etc. Secondary sources analyze an event after it occurred and include journal articles and your textbook. Photography was a new media during the Civil War. Although some photographs of earlier battles exist, the Civil War was really the first major conflict to be documented in all its aspects via camera.
