Plagiarism: Don't Do It and How to Avoid It

According to the TCC Student Code of Conduct, "plagiarism" includes, but is not limited to, the use, by paraphrase or direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of another person without clear and full acknowledgment. It also includes the unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers and other academic materials.

Plagiarism and its consequences are easy to avoid!

1. Do your own work.

2. Acknowledge other people's work. (How? Cite it!)

The APA Plagiarism Tutorial will teach you how to properly cite and paraphrase information in your chosen citation style. Please see the resources on this page for more information. If you have any questions or concerns, ask your instructor, a librarian, or a writing tutor for help.

Creating APA In-Text Citations

APA Resources

The TCC Southeast Writing Center can help you with APA citation questions. The Writing Center has live chat and asynchronous (email) options for you to get help with formatting your citations. They also offer multiple workshops you can attend for free that focus on APA style.

Creating citations is often easier than students think.

  • Step 1: Determine what type of source you are using. For example, is it a book, a journal article, or a webpage?
  • Step 2: Follow the citation format for that resource. These citation formats are explained in the resources below.

That's really all there is to it. Citations are just a formula you follow so others reading your paper have the information they need to find the sources you used.
