Recognizing the Vital Role of Women in American History

• In 1982, at the request of Congress, President Reagan issued Presidential Proclamation 4903 proclaiming March 7-13 as the first "Women's History Week." Congress continued to designate one week in March as "Women's History Week" for each of the next four years.
• In 1987, a petition championed by the National Women's History Project led Congress to designate the entire month of March as "Women's History Month."
• From 1988 to 1994, Congress annually passed resolutions "requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women's History Month." Each US president since Bill Clinton has continued the annual tradition of designating the month of March as Women's History Month through Presidential Proclamation.
