ENGL 1302 NW Madore: A Raisin in the Sun

Examples of Topics for A Raisin in the Sun

FAMILY

FAMILY is a powerful topic in the play. As an example, you can consider the concepts of matriarchy and patriarchy in the family and how they relate to Mama’s and Walter’s roles respectively.

To start you can - from the Library's Advanced Search screen - conduct an “Any field” (basically a keyword) search for the terms matriarchy OR patriarchy (OR is capitalized to include articles that contain either term) on the first search line and “African American Families(in parenthesis to search that exact statement) on the second line.

RACE

RACE is also a significant topic in the play, for example, think about Beneatha's two very different boyfriends, Joseph and George.

Try using search terms like blackness on the first search line and "African Americans and Africans" on the second search line.

THE AMERICAN DREAM

THE AMERICAN DREAM is a major topic, as well.

You can use search terms such as the "American Dream" on the first search line and, maybe assimilation on the second. As with any search results you can work with the filters on the left hand of the search results screen to narrow your enquiry in a variety of ways. In this case you might use the Subject filter and select African Americans.
