The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) is an American English style and usage guide that has been published by the University of Chicago Press since 1906. It is used as a style guide for published works more than academic papers. Chicago-style citations use either an author-date format or numbered notes and a bibliography. The author-date format is favored by those in sciences and social sciences. The numbered notes and bibliography format is used by those in history, literature, and the arts.
