The Academy of American Poets established April as National Poetry Month in 1996 as a celebration designed to highlight the cultural importance of poetry.
Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.
Poetry dates back several thousand years. It was used to remember history, stories, genealogy, and law. The first poems were read aloud or sung. Over time, poetry took on structured forms. However, much poetry from the late twentieth century to today has abandoned such forms.
