The HoloLens 2 is the latest development in mixed reality technology from Microsoft. It is a more advanced version of the original HoloLens, featuring an improved field of view, nearly twice the size of the original HoloLens (52 degrees vs. 34 degrees.) It also features improved hologram stability and eye-tracking, fully articulated hand--tracking, semantic labeling and spatial audio. This results in a more immersive virtual reality experience.
The purpose of this LibGuide is to demonstrate to the faculty how to get started with the HoloLens 2 and some of the educational programs that have been created specifically for this advanced piece of technology. It is our hope that this will better enable you to find ways to use the HoloLens 2 in your instruction and further enhance the classroom experience.
The chief benefit of the HoloLens 2 is that it frees the hands while allowing users to interact with realistic virtual models. While the technology is still in the rudimentary stages, tremendous strides have been made in using the HoloLens 2 as an instructional tool. Mechanics use the HoloLens 2 to pull up blueprints while leaving their hands free to work. Medical students use it to examine complex models of the body at work. There are HoloLens 2 apps which allow IT professionals to find the weak signal spaces around a wireless router by translating the Wi-Fi signal into a visible light. The possibilities are virtually limitless and more and more apps are being made available through the Microsoft App Store every month.
